A long straight road west from Chur leads you up into the big, broad wooded valley of the River Vorderrhein (the Rein Anteriur in Romansh), a patch of countryside known in Romansh as Surselva, the High Forests. The little-known ski and sports resort of Flims is within easy reach of Chur, but west of Flims the only access is along the valley floor by a single road or rail line. The handful of quiet towns along the way is capped at the extreme western end of the valley by a huge Benedictine abbey at Disentis/Mustér, staging post for journeys south over the Lukmanier (Lucomagno) Pass into Canton Ticino, and west via the Oberalppass and Andermatt into Canton Valais.
