Zurich, a Swiss-German speaking, protestant city and canton, comes first in most business respects, as it is the undisputed economic capital of the country, where many of the biggest Swiss companies have their head office.

Due to the decentralized nature of the Swiss State, however, you should not expect everything to be centered in Zurich. In fact, most of the federal institutions are in other Swiss cities: the seat of Parliament and Government are in Bern, the Supreme Court is in Lausanne and the Insurance Supreme Court in Lucerne.

Thus, every region gets its piece of the action and equilibrium is preserved.
