Car rental in
International reservations
You can book a vehicle in advance on the Internet or by telephone. This is highly recommended if you are arriving late to Geneva: rental agencies close at 7 p.m. in the city, although you can obtain a car on reservation up until 11:30 p.m. at the Geneva airport. Major hotels will gladly take care of this for you.
Bear in mind, however, that it may be hard to find a rental vehicle in Geneva during the summer season or when international trade fairs are taking place.

Renting
Rentals are allocated by 24-hour day with unlimited kilometers. Starting the second day, prices lower progressively (with advantageous rates for one to three weeks and for one month). Each agency offers a "weekend special" (from Friday to Monday, 1,500 km included). Some agencies offer better rates at night (6 p.m. - 8 a.m.) or with a limited number of kilometers (Europcar).

Vehicle categories and prices
Although each agency offers different models, vehicles are always categorized by their engine capacity. The table below gives an overall view of the different categories and the corresponding prices in Switzerland.

Engine capacity

Model Doors Seats Price/day
1.2-1.4 cu.cm Opel Corsa 3 4 100-150 CHF
1.4-2.0 cu.cm Opel Vectra 5 5 150-250 CHF
2.0-3.0 cu.cm Opel Sintra 5 5 250-400 CHF
Station Wagon VW Sharan 5 7 250-300 CHF

Insurance
Rental prices include theft insurance as well as third-party liability insurance (with a 1,000-CHF deductible). You can, however, reduce the deductible to 300 CHF by taking out an additional insurance for 20 or so francs. Some agencies also offer to cover passengers and baggage (Avis). In the event of a breakdown, you automatically benefit from roadside assistance anywhere in Switzerland (Touring Club Suisse).

Payment and rental conditions
You must have a driving license and a credit card. A deposit will be held up until you return the vehicle, at which point the payment is directly debited from your credit card. You are responsible for the cost of fuel.
You do not require an international license.
