Winterthur : arrival, information and orientation
Home > Tourist Guide > Table of contents > Zurich > Winthertur > Arrival

Winterthur is well connected to Zürich by both mainline trains and the S-Bahn. The station is centrally located at the western edge of the small Old Town, no more than a short stroll from all the city-centre sights. The parallel streets Stadthausstrasse and Untertor lead due east from Bahnhofplatz into the Old Town.

The pedestrianized Old Town itself is roughly triangular, spreading east from a point at Bahnhofplatz. The main east–west street begins as Untertor, continues east as Marktgasse, and changes its name again to Obertor as it crosses Graben. Obertor ends at a traffic junction, some 500m east of the starting point at the station. The network of Old Town alleys lies south of the Untertor–Obertor line; parallel one street north runs Stadthausstrasse bordered by the Stadtgarten, and one street north again is Museumstrasse, with the Kunstmuseum.

Information
The helpful tourist office is in the train station (Mon–Fri 8.30am–6.30pm, Sat 8.30am–4pm; 052/269 26 66, fax 269 26 60, www.winterthur-city.ch), with maps and stacks of information on the city, including pamphlets detailing bike routes around town and into the surrounding countryside (the station has the usual bike rental facilities). The most useful item on sale is a Museumspass, which gives free entry to all the city museums for one/two/three days (Fr.20/25/28). Ask, too, about the Kunstweekend offer, comprising accommodation and free museum entry over two weekend days (from Fr.104) or three (Fr.184). You can join a ninety-minute guided tour of the town, beginning from the tourist office at 10am on the first and third Saturdays of each month (May–Oct only; Fr.15).

The Stadtbibliothek, in the same building as the Kunstmuseum, has Internet access (Mon 10am–6pm, Tues–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–4pm; Fr.12/hr).
