The five-star Eienwäldlicampsite (041/637 19 49, fax 637 44 23; closed Nov) is on the southeastern edge of the village, about half-an-hour’s walk from the centre. Otherwise, there’s an HI hostel 500m west of the station, at Dorfstrasse 80 (041/637 12 92, fax 637 49 88; June to mid-Oct & Dec to mid-April), with dorms from Fr.26 and excellent meals.

There are plenty of hotels big and small dotted throughout the centre and the surrounding slopes. All of them offer discounts for stays beyond three nights, and all have a winter high season.

Bellevue, Bahnhofplatz (041/637 12 13, fax 637 44 49). A grand lobby preludes characterful old-style rooms that are excellent value – most are en suite, and all have high ceilings and an air of faded grandeur. Many rooms are let to students during term time.

Cathrin, Birrenweg (041/637 44 66, fax 637 43 28). Pleasant, quiet place near the Titlis cable-car, away from the bustle.

Edelweiss, Terracestrasse (041/637 07 37, fax 637 39 00). Charming Art Nouveau hotel above the village, dating from 1901 and now in the hands of uniquely friendly and welcoming English-speaking owner/managers. Stylish, spotless rooms, and broad valley views bring it head and shoulders above its competitors.

Engelberg, Dorfstrasse (041/637 11 68, fax 637 32 35). Comfortable place on the pedestrianized main street, with warm and cosy rooms.

Europe, Dorfstrasse (041/637 00 94, fax 637 22 55). Grandiose village-centre pile dating from 1902, with some of the bright, attractive rooms boasting wrought-iron balconies, chandeliers and fittings from an age of tourism long past.

St Jakob, Engelbergerstrasse (041/637 13 88). Small, simple family pension on the road west of the centre, also with dorms from Fr.36.

Terrace, Terracestrasse (041/639 66 66, fax 639 66 99). Huge presence looming above the village, built in 1906 and newly renovated throughout, with a glorious sun terrace and comfortable rooms, accessible either by car or by its own tiny funicular.
