Les Diablerets : practicalities

Regular trains run to Les Diablerets from Aigle; buses also connect the village with Gstaad via a dramatically steep road which winds over the Col du Pillon (1546m), 4km east of Les Diablerets. The tiny switchback road over the Col de la Croix (1778m) 4km south of Les Diablerets leads to Villars; three buses a day (July–Sept only) shuttle between the two resorts.

The station is in the village beside the river, about 100m north of the tourist office (July, Aug & Dec–April daily 8.30am–6.30pm; rest of year Mon–Sat 8.30am–12.30pm & 2–6pm, Sun 9am–12.30pm; 024/492 33 58, www.alpes.ch/diablerets). Every September, Les Diablerets hosts the International Alpine Film Festival. Mountain Evasion (024/492 12 32) and Centre Par Adventure (024/492 23 82) are two companies in the village organizing adventure activities, including canyoning, zorbing, luge, mud biking, rappelling and more.

Most accommodation is in chalets, but of the hotels, the Auberge de la Poste (024/492 31 24, fax 492 12 68; b), a 200-year old inn that claims to have hosted Victor Hugo, Stravinsky and Lenin in years gone by, is pleasantly rustic. A little out of town on the Route de Pillon is Les Diablotins (024/492 36 33, fax 492 23 55; a), a more basic choice with shared-bath rooms. Two comfortable places facing each other north of the station are Le Chamois (024/492 26 53, fax 492 26 06; c), a “garni” hotel, and Les Lilas (024/492 31 34, fax 492 31 57; a–b), the latter with some cheaper shared-bath rooms. There are two mountain inns with dorms above the village – one at Isenau (Phone & fax 024/492 32 93; Fr.34; June–Sept & Dec–April), and the other, the Cabane des Diablerets (024/492 21 02; Fr.29; mid-June to mid-Sept), overlooking the glacier at 2525m. Eating is mainly a hotel option, with the inexpensive restaurants at the Auberge de la Poste and especially Les Lilas worth checking out.
