Aigle’s train station, with change facilities (daily 5.15am–10.10pm), is west of the centre, at one end of the 300m-long Rue de la Gare. At the other end you’ll find the small tourist office, 4 Rue de la Gare (Mon–Fri 8am–noon & 2–5pm; 024/466 30 00); they stock photocopied maps and few bits and pieces about the town. Just outside the office is Place du Centre, from where the pedestrianized café-street of Rue de Bourg leads north. Parallel to it is the remarkable little cobbled alley Rue de Jérusalem, the upper floors of its old wooden houses spanning the street in a style which reminded one nineteenth-century observer of the shaded residential quarters of Middle Eastern cities. The main Rue de Colomb heads southeast from the Place du Centre to adjacent Place du Marché, from where Avenue du Cloître leads you further southeast towards the château.

Aigle has only a couple of central hotels: Les Messageries, 19 Rue du Midi (024/466 20 60, fax 466 62 58; a) offers the simplest of comforts, with a choice of en-suite and shared-bath rooms; Hôtel du Nord, 2 Rue Colomb (024/466 10 55, fax 466 42 48; b) is more upmarket. Otherwise, you can camp at Les Glariers (024/466 26 60; April–Sept), about 1km west of town.
